iIndicator Details

% Arts Activities Out of School (EMH)

Short Definition: % of students who participate in an arts out of school activity

Long Definition:

The percent of students within a given school who said they dance, play music instruments, perform theater or participate in arts programs (including music, dance, art, and theater) after school or on the weekends.

This question was answered as part of the SurveyWorks questionnaire and was included in the surveys for middle and high school students. SurveyWorks is the Rhode Island Department of Education's new opinions-and-perceptions survey and is administered annually to all students in grades 4-12. SurveyWorks is age appropriate for each level elementary, middle and high school but it covers roughly the same areas of questioning for all three levels.

Purpose:

As afterschool hours are the peak time for involvement in risky behaviors, this indicator allows for comparison of adolescents' afterschool involvement with their involvement in risky behaviors.

Limitations:

Students were asked about different arts activities between the years. In 2009-10 through 2011-12, high school and middle school students were asked if they dance, play music, and/or perform theater. In 2012-13 and 2013-14, high school and middle school students were asked if they play a musical instrument and/or participate in an arts program such as music, dance, art, or theater. Elementary students were asked whether they dance, play an instrument, and/or act in plays each year.

This information is self reported.
