Short Definition: % of students who participated in any type of after-school activity
Percent of students who reported on the SALT survey that they "belonged but didn't attend regularly" or "belonged and attended regularly" or "belonged/participated" in any after-school activities in the past year including: interscholastic sports through school, volunteer or youth service activity through school, youth sports or recreation programs in the community, other youth programs in the community, formal lessons not part of school (e.g. YMCA/YWCA, Scouting, etc.), library-related activities, paid informal work, paid work at a "real" job, academic, career, or cultural enrichment activities through school, or career exploration services.

As afterschool hours are the peak time for involvement in risky behaviors, this indicator allows for comparison of adolescents' afterschool involvement with their involvement in risky behaviors.
The last SALT survey was administered in 2007-08. The new SurveyWorks! survey is replacing SALT.
The indicator does not include responses "Something Else" for years 09-10 and 10-11. If those responses were to be added, the indicator would be 100% for each school.
Universe: Rhode Island public elementary, middle, high school students in participating schools and grades
